Giving back in our communities is something we take great pride in.
We are excited to be partnering with so many like minded caring individuals to bring hope and support to those who need it.

Julie Sawatzky

Founder & CEO

“At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, it was Julie and her family who were out on the streets of downtown Kitchener, handing out leftovers and food from their own fridge to those living unsheltered and to those living well below the poverty line.

She always knew there was a need in Waterloo Region but truly had no idea to what extreme that needs was until she started forming relationships and chatting with the folks she was supporting.

It became immediately apparent that local programs and services were not enough to meet the needs of so many folks and that the gap was too big for her and her family to fill themselves. So she went to social media, created a group and started asking for donations and people to join her.

Her call to action was put out there – and 8,000 facebook members responded to that call and committed to join her mission. How Julie was able to mobilize thousands of volunteers and touch the lives of so many people in need, was nothing short of incredible.

Julie’s mission at 519 CC began with simply feeding folks living on the streets. However, it has grown to be so much more. 519CC now collects a large variety of donations, including but not limited to clothing, shoes, household goods, food, toiletries, feminine products, tents, tarps, outdoor essentials, children’s items, monetary gifts, gift cards, etc.

With these donations, the group now offers weekly outreach events (providing hot meals, sandwiches, and clothing/toiletries to anyone who shows up), emergency food hampers to families living in poverty, urban meal program (providing seniors living alone, or families going through medical emergencies/bereavement with prepared freezer meals), new beginnings program (helping folks transitioning from shelters to their own apartment in obtaining new furniture and essentials for their home), holiday gift hampers, and much more!

In less than a year, Julie Sawatzky and the 519 Community Collective have not only caught the attention of many citizens of Waterloo Region, but also the media.

In addition to the many tasks that Julie takes on in a day – whether it be preparing emergency food hampers, accepting the on-going donations at her home, shopping for the Urban Meal program, answering emails, coordinating volunteers, etc. – she always makes time to share the important work of the 519 Community Collective with the media – bringing awareness and education to the community about issues facing those living sheltered or in poverty in Waterloo Region.

Julie has been interviewed in a number of on-air programs including the podcast Heart Beats Hate, CBC Radio -The Morning Edition K-W, Virgin Radio, Faith FM, and KFUN are just a few.

Her passion and commitment to this work are so apparent when listening to her speak. She brings the stories of those living on the streets and in poverty to life.

Julie and the 519 Community Collective have also been featured in The Record, The Grand Magazine, and The New Hamburg Independent. While Julie began this initiative on her own, she quickly realized the need was much greater than she could ever provide alone. Having an already established social network and presence in the community through her photography business, Julie knew that her people would respond to this call to action!

By starting the 519 Facebook group, Julie has inspired 8,000 people to get involved and give in any way they can! From volunteering their time to physical donations to monetary donations, it is clear that the community is inspired to help.

Through the group, Julie and her incredible co-chair Leah, and the admin team are also able to use the platform to educate the community about the realities of homelessness and addiction/mental health problems within our own community.

Julie’s commitment to meeting folks where they are at, and offering non-judgmental support to anyone in need has inspired others to open their hearts just a little bit more. Her welcoming attitude and generous spirit continue to inspire others to approach folks dealing with challenges with kindness and compassion.

Julie is truly the epitome of the saying “Lead by example”. In witnessing the work she is doing and the love she is pouring into the community each and every week, so many others have been inspired to do the same.

Local businesses are stepping up to the plate and hosting fundraisers to support 519CC, families are coming together to make care packages or write notes of encouragement for people receiving food hampers, and individuals are taking time out of their schedules to come and hand out food or deliver hampers.

It’s truly inspiring and amazing to see what 8,000 kind hearted people can accomplish when they all come together!” – by Amanda Audrey

“Hi! I’m Lisa and I have the pleasure of being the 519 Nourish Kitchen Admin.  I love to cook (and eat!) but I’m a bit of a rebel when it comes to following a recipe. No dish tastes the same twice, but variety is the spice of life, right?

Food is love, and I see our kitchen teams every week pour so much love into the food we prepare. Filling bellies with nutritious, delicious food is our jam.  The entire 519 Community inspires me every day.

When I’m not in the 519 kitchen, I am probably painting, sketching, or watching reality TV and Food Network.

I’ve been a professional artist since 2017, and I run my own paint night business Social Art. I also get to host “On The Canvas with Lisa Braun’ on Rogers TV.”

“Hello. My name is Beth Cooper and I am so happy to be joining the admin team for 519CC. I was born and raised in Burlington where I worked as an elementary teacher for over 30 years.

In 2020, my husband and I moved to Kitchener and I was shocked and saddened to see how much need there was in this community for basic necessities such as food and shelter.

I discovered 519CC a year ago and I was so impressed with the work that Julie and her volunteers were doing to provide emergency aid to those in need.

Since joining the collective, I have
participated in special events such as the Thanksgiving and Christmas hampers, helped organize our recent Easter egg event and created blessing bags and cereal kits.

More recently, I have become involved with the weekly SOS hamper program as well as the urban garden. I have
always believed that it is possible for one person to make a difference and Julie is such a testament to this. What she has accomplished in such a short time is incredible and I feel so honoured to be a part of this journey.

I look forward to learning and growing in this new admin role and I am grateful to Julie for this opportunity.”

“Hi, I am Sadia from Karachi, Pakistan. Moved to Canada in 2011. Loved being here but really missed being connected with people who I could help. Back home we are able to help on an everyday basis.

519 community collective was perfect in every way, I joined the community and could help people in every way.

If I had time I would drop-off hampers, extra groceries could go to the Free pantry, Fresh produce to the Nourish fridge and loved gardening in the summer at the urban garden. Cash donations to help with whatever was needed.

The community is so transparent and easy to join that once I was a part  I couldn’t leave.

Thank you Julie and all the volunteers  love you all so much!”

“Hi, pleased to meet you. My nickname among the admin team has been “The guy with a truck”.  I found this group quite by accident in the spring of 2020 when I donated some funds to a little grassroots organization run by Julie Sawatzky.

Since then it has been my absolute pleasure to witness the generosity of this community and to play a small part in blessing so many lovely people. I also want to respectfully acknowledge what I believe is God’s blessing on this organization as well. My primary role now is being part of the admin team with a focus on the New Beginnings Program. I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all who contributed to our trailer fund!!  Words can not express how much of a blessing it is to our programs. I am now known as The guy with a truck and trailer !!Thank you all for your continued support in whatever way you are able. Much love to you all!”

Ana Enamorado

Admin

“Hello everyone, I am Ana from El Salvador. It was the will of God for me to come to Canada 23 years ago and I am so grateful for that.

It was not easy as I had to face so many adjustments at once in order to start my life here. What amazed me was the bunch of generous people God had in line to help me and my family; some I never even met.

519 Community is my way of paying it forward; a group of people God has purposefully prepared and who are willing to help unconditionally. People with a desire and priority to bring anyone back on their feet.

I feel blessed to be part of this group of volunteers that has taught me so much since Aug. 11 2020. I can not express the pleasure and satisfaction I got that day loading my car with donations and for the first time doing a drop off to Mary’s place. If you need someone to listen, I am here for you. Love you all!”

I’m drawn to the New Beginnings Program because of the amazing people we meet and serve each day.  The strength this community demonstrates by coming together to lift each other up, is inspiring!  I’m proud to be part of the 519 Board of Directors and can easily say they are such a caring and dedicated group of people.

I also want to mention my fabulous partners!! Rick – ‘The Guy with the truck’, Tim, who is always there to help, and Andrea and Rebecca, and Sarah who all work hard, and together make a great team; a team that has truly become a family.
